For purposes of this competition, research will be broadly defined (i.e., qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, theoretical work are eligible).
Applications should include:
The submissions should be no more than 1500 words and speak to each of the criteria noted:
1. a clearly articulated statement of the research question (if empirical) or thesis statement (if theoretical/philosophical).
2. a brief overview of related literature.
3. a statement regarding how the proposed research will contribute to the field of distance education, online, blended, and/or distributed learning.
4. a statement of the proposed research design, data collection and methodology including analysis techniques.
5. information regarding the proposed timeline. It is expected that the proposed research will be completed within one year for Masters studies or within two years for Doctoral studies. Research in the final draft stage is not eligible for this award.
6. a letter of support from a member of the applicant's thesis/dissertation committee or the chair of the applicant's unit.
7. a copy of ethics approval, if appropriate.
8. a budget outling anticipated costs of conducting research. Please provide justifications for the budget figures.
9. the proposed approach to disseminating research outcomes. (It is expected that the recipient(s) of the award(s) will make the outcomes of the work available to the Association through one or more of the following: one of the journals, the Conference, a Wise and Witty Weekday session or an Asynch online discussion session).
* clearly articulated research question or thesis statement;
* relevance of research to the field of distance education, online, blended, or distributed learning;
* the extent to which the proposed research builds on and contributes to the literature (i.e.,
* conceptual and/or theoretical framework in which this study is situated);
* well conceived research design and methodology (data collection and analysis techniques);
* strength of letter of support;
* projected timeline;
* proposed plans for dissemination.
The timeline for this annual award process is:
* Disseminate call for proposals: early November of each year.
* Deadline for receipt of submissions: 26 February.
* Successful applicants advised: early April.
* Distribution of funds: April/May (The process for distribution of the funds through the CNIE Secretariat office will be confirmed with the specific award winner(s) at the time.)
* Recipient of award announced at and a framed certificate presented during the Awards ceremony at the conference banquet; and
* The award recipient will be asked to prepare a 500-word piece in “ fyi ” section of the CNIE Journal in the issue produced subsequent to the conference.
